All you Need to know about Mouni Roy

Mouni Roy (born 28 September 1985) is an Indian actress, singer, Kathak dancer, and model who primarily works in Hindi films and television. She debuted into television in 2007 with the role of Krishna Tulsi in the soap opera Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi on Star Plus. After featuring in several other shows, she got her breakthrough with the show Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev on Life OK in 2011 in which she played Sati. She also essayed Meera in Life OK’s Junoon – Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq and contested in Zara Nachke Dikha (2008), Pati Patni Aur Woh (2009), Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7 (2014), Box Cricket League 2 (2016) and Lip Sing Battle (2017).

Roy went on to establish herself as one of the highest-paid Hindi television actresses with her portrayal of Shivanya, a shape shifting serpent in the supernatural thriller Naagin 1 (2015–16) on Colors TV. In the show’s sequel Naagin 2 (2016–17), she reprised the role of Shivanya in cameo and played a new lead role of Shivanya’s daughter Shivangi, another shape shifting serpent. Following Naagin, she received offers from Bollywood, making her Hindi film debut in Reema Kagti‘s sports drama Gold (2018), a critical and commercial success that also garnered her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut nomination. In 2019, she ventured into singing with the remake single “Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein”. Mouni Roy receives UAE golden visa.

Early Life

Mouni Roy was born in Cooch BeharWest Bengal to a Rajbongshi family on 28 September 1985. Her grandfather, Shekhar Chandra Roy was a well-known Jatra theatre artist. Her mother Mukti was a theatre artist, and her father Anil Roy was an office superintendent of the Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad. She did her schooling till class 12th from Kendriya Vidyalaya in Baburhat, Cooch Behar and then went to Delhi. She took up mass communication at Jamia Milia Islamia at her parents’ insistence, but left the course midway and went to Mumbai to try her luck in the Bollywood film industry. She finished her part 1 exams and did not return to Delhi after that.Roy had an interest in acting since her childhood and cited actresses MadhubalaMadhuri Dixit and Waheeda Rehman as her acting idols.

Film and television debut (2006–2010)

In 2004, Roy appeared as a background dancer in the song “Nahi Hona” in Run. She started her career in 2006 with the Ekta Kapoor drama Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, playing the role of Krishna Tulsi opposite Pulkit Samrat.[16] She then participated and won the first season of Zara Nachke Dikha along with Karishma Tanna and Jennifer Winget. Roy then appeared as Shivani in the series Kasturi. In 2008, she participated in Pati Patni Aur Woh along with Gaurav Chopra. In 2010, she played Roop in Do Saheliyaan.

Breakthrough, success and stardom in television (2011–2017)

In 2011, Roy starred in the Punjabi movie Hero Hitler in Love. She attained fame after playing the role of Sati in Life OK‘s mythological series Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev from 2011 to 2014.[17] During that time she played the lead as Meera opposite Aditya Redij in Life OK‘s Junoon – Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq in 2013.[18] In 2014, Mouni participated in the dance reality show on Colors Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in its seventh season along with Punit Pathak.

In 2015, Roy returned to television with Ekta Kapoor‘s supernatural series Naagin, playing the role of Shivanya opposite Arjun Bijlani and Adaa Khan. The series topped the TRP charts, making her a household name not only in India but in other countries as well. She became one of the players of Bijlani’s team Mumbai Tigers in Box Cricket League. She hosted the dance show So You Think You Can Dance along with Rithvik Dhanjani on &TV. She played a double role in Season 2 of Naagin, with Karanvir Bohra playing the male lead. Her chemistry with Bijlani in season 1 and with Bohra in season 2 was highly appreciated by audience and established her as a leading actress in Indian Television Industry. In 2016, Roy voiced the role of Sita in the animated film Mahayodha Rama. In the same year, she appeared in the song “Nachna Aunda Ni” in Tum Bin 2.

Bollywood debut and break from television (2018–present)

In 2018, Roy made her Bollywood debut alongside Akshay Kumar in Gold directed by Reema Kagti. Her performance was praised. Hindustan Times wrote, “Mouni Roy as Akshay’s wife Monobina is just the right mixture of crotchety and charming. With her grasp of Bengali, she brings that extra something to the film’s milieu.” Suparna Sharma of Asian Age reviewed her performance and sensuality: “Her Monobina is created out of Punjabi men and women’s fetishised fantasy of married Bengali women – snappy and scolding, but also sexy and sultry.”[24] With global earnings of ₹1.5 billion, Gold emerged as a commercial success and became first Indian film to have a theatrical release in South Arabia.

Roy followed the success of Gold with an item number named “Gali Gali” in December 2018; it featured in the Hindi version of K.G.F: Chapter 1. The song, a recreation of a track from Tridev (1989), became extremely popular, and she was praised for her dance. Since then, it has garnered over 3.5 billion views on YouTube.

In May 2019, she made a cameo appearance in the final few episodes of Naagin 3 as Mahanaagrani Shivangi.

Roy’s first film release in 2019 was Romeo Akbar Walter, which also starred John Abraham and Jackie Shroff. Her performance as a R&AW spy drew mixed reviews. A Bollywood Hungama review stated, “Mouni Roy has an interesting part to essay. Though she does well, her character gets a raw deal.” Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV criticised the length of her role: “Mouni Roy, cast as the hero’s colleague and beloved, pops up now and then in an eminently forgettable role.” Romeo Akbar Walter underperformed at the box office.[31] Her next film, Made in China was released on the occasion of Diwali. Roy took Gujarati lessons for the film in which she enacted a disturbed housewife. In a review by Vibha Maru of India Today, her performance was described as “a surprise package. Though given a small role, Mouni comes with much power, owning every bit of the screen time she gets in the film.” Made in China faced competition from Housefull 4 and Saand Ki Aankh, but proved a commercial success.

In 2020, she appeared as a pregnant R&AW spy named Uma Kulkarni in her first OTT feature film London Confidential. Though critics were not impressed by the film, but praised Roy.[36] Rediff.com wrote, “Mouni Roy shows conviction in playing her part and is in a different avatar from her earlier performances in Gold and Made in China.”

She was slated to play the female lead in Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer Bole Chudiyan, but she quit after clashes with the makers of the film.

Roy also has an upcoming major project in 2022, the superhero trilogy Brahmāstra, co-starring Ranbir KapoorAlia Bhatt and Amitabh Bachchan. The film is directed by Ayan Mukherjee and produced by Karan Johar. She will play the main antagonist in the film. It is slated to release on 9 September.Roy will also be making a guest appearance in Vikas Bahl‘s Ganpath: Part One (2022), and has been reportedly signed as the leading lady in Sanjay Gupta‘s sports drama, opposite Harshvardhan Rane and Meezaan Jafri, and Milan Luthria‘s web series based on Arnab Ray‘s book Sultan of Delhi: Ascension, also featuring Tahir Raj Bhasin and Neha Sharma. Roy will also appear as judge in the fifth season of the reality show Dance India Dance Li’l Masters.

Personal life

Early in her career she entered into a relationship with actor Gaurav Chopra, with whom she appeared on Pati Patni Aur Woh. However, soon both of them got separated.[46] Since 2011, Roy was rumoured to be dating Devon Ke Dev… Mahadev co-star Mohit Raina but denied their relationship in the press. In 2018, she stated that she has severed all her ties with Raina. The reason behind their breakup was never identified.

In January 2021, it was reported that Roy is soon set to marry her Dubai-based banker boyfriend Suraj Nambiar, but she refuted such reports saying that she is “sick of rumors and speculations.” However in October 2021, Roy’s cousin Vidyut Roy Sarkar, spoke to a leading media portal and revealed that she is all set to marry Nambiar in January 2022 which the actress later confirmed. After dating for almost three years admist public scrutiny, Roy tied knot with Nambiar on 27 January 2022 in Goa, as per traditional Malayali and Bengali ceremonies.

Dua Lipa’s Manifested Collaboration- Cold Heart

The “Levitating” singer Dua Lipa stated that she manifested a collaboration with Elton John.

In an interview at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Dua Lipa talked about her upcoming concert tours and collaborations. The 26-year-old singer, was wearing a black dress with black knee-high boots in her appearance on the show.

She revealed that when Elton John made a phone call regarding collaboration on a song,she was sitting in the pool in a bikini and cowboy hat.

Dua Lipa stated that she wanted to say yes to collaboration right away. After listening to song Cold Heart, she felt that the song was similar to an old hit song Rocket Man by Elton John. She told that,” Rocket Man is my driving song, ‘he said. ‘My shower song. My song for myself”.

In Response she said,”Elton, I’m available too. I also know the lyrics to Rocket Man,”. She expressed that it felt like it was a manifested collaboration.

she said,’I worked on this album for so long. I was very passionate about it and very proud about it as well. It was a body of work where I finally felt like I’d found my confidence and who I was really as an artist and a songwriter.’

She stated when everything was closed, she did not want to believe it, she thought with great doubt that maybe it was time to release an album.

She said. ‘I can never preempt what song people are going to react to the best but Levitating was the first song that helped dictate the rest of the album.’

Stephen asked her regarding her previous plans on her world tour in April 2020. About two years later, Dua indicated that she was about to embark on that journey. It would be ‘very different’ than that that had been originally planned especially a Future Nostalgia trip.

On asking about Service 95, a global concierge service that she has started, she said she loves to keep a list of everything. She stated, the idea was to discuss all her opinions and recommendations and to help people at same time.

Stephen asked her if she liked being interviewed or interviewing people. She replied that she likes to interview people. Moreover she is also releasing a podcast ” Dua Lipa at your service ” very soon.
